Honest Plumbing Tips

Ignoring a problem can only make it worse and that is certainly the case when it comes to plumbing. Ignoring any issues - even seemingly small ones, will only result in damage to your bathroom or kitchen and will end up costing you more money than you ever anticipated. Follow our honest plumbing tips to avoid any crisis that may arise.

1) Know where the main water supply cut-off is. If something goes wrong with the plumbing, it's important for every member of the household to know where the main water supply cut-off is to avoid any risk of flooding. Your furniture and electrical appliances will thank you!

2) Be on the lookout for any wet spots. Wet spots under sinks can be a sign of leaking pipes which can wreak havoc if left untended. It also increases the risk of mould which can lead to serious health problems in the long run.

3) Monitor water pressure. If you notice a change in water pressure, it might be because of a partial blocking in your pipes which can lead to bad odours and health problems due to a build-up of bacteria.

4) Check your water heater. Regularly inspect your water heater for any signs of rust as this is a sign that your water heater needs to be replaced.

5) Avoid the use of strong chemicals. Wherever possible, avoid using strong chemicals to clear blocked drains as excessive use can end up eating away at your pipes. They are also harmful to the environment and highly toxic - often giving off strong fumes which can irritate the eyes. Natural homemade cleaners can be made using bicarb soda and white vinegar. This is both a safer and cheaper option.

6) Own a plunger. A plunger is inexpensive and also an incredibly handy tool to have lying around the house. Sure, it might sit in the laundry untouched most of the time, but once the inevitable happens and your toilet gets blocked, you'll be counting your lucky stars that you have a plunger on hand.

7) Be prepared. Plumbing emergencies can strike at any time and the last thing you want is to be caught unprepared. Taking some cautionary steps can help you save a lot of money and time. Knowing where the main cut-off to your water supply is can stop potential flooding and having a plumber's business card on hand or their number in your phone are just a few things you can do to be better prepared.
