You may not think about your water heater on a daily basis, but when you step into a steaming hot shower in the morning or ease into a warm bath after a long day, you’re relying on it. Most people don’t appreciate the convenience that a hot water heater provides until theirs suddenly fails, leaving them scrambling to get it repaired or replaced.
Often times, people are blind-sided by hot water heater failure and find themselves dealing with the inconvenience of living with cold water until an emergency plumber can arrive on the scene and assist with the situation.
The good news is that many times, hot water heaters give signs that they’re beginning to wear out, and if you’re aware of what to look for, you can spot the symptoms and get help quickly. A qualified plumber may be able to repair your system before it breaks and can alternatively replace your system with a new, more reliable model.
Here are some signs that indicate problems with your water heater could be on the horizon.
– Changes in the colour of your water. Many times, water heater problems occur due to corrosion inside of the appliance. When corrosion becomes severe, bits of rust and metal can come loose inside of the water heater, leading to water discoloration or particles and sediment appearing in it.
– Poor-tasting water. Corrosion can also affect the way your water tastes, even if it still looks clear to the naked eye. If your water heater is starting to wear out, you may begin to notice a metallic taste from the water in your taps.
– Popping or cracking sounds When you turn the hot water on, a water heater that is full of mineral build-up may make odd noises that sound like a pop or a crackle. Strange sounds can also indicate that parts inside of the water heater have begun to go bad.
– Moisture, leaks and puddles. Eventually, corrosion can lead to holes in the water heater, which can allow water to seep, leak or run out. Holes may be very hard to see, but you’ll often be able to feel the moisture on the sides of the water heater or see evidence of water pooling on the floor around the unit.
– Changes in hot water availability. If your shower starts to get cold before you’ve finished or you find yourself turning up the hot water more to maintain a constant temperature, an ailing hot water heater may be to blame. Other factors can affect hot water availability, however, so look for a continuous, ongoing pattern. Try showering at different times of the day to be sure that the shortage isn’t due to your washing machine, dishwasher or other members of your family showering before you.
