How To Clean A Smelly Drain

20th November 2017

how to clean smelly drain

It's usually not obvious that you've got an issue with your drain until it starts to smell, and when that happens you'll want to get to the root of the problem right away. In this blog post, we discuss a great method for cleaning smelly drains in your house, so you can get back to living in a clean, healthy home environment right away.

1. Gather your ingredients

The most foolproof and popular method for cleaning out smelly drains is using a combination of baking soda and vinegar. There's a reason for this - it works! First, raid your cupboards or visit your local store to acquire some standard baking soda and vinegar.

2. Fill the drain with hot water

First, you'll need to boil a bucketful of hot water and pour it down your drain.

3. Add baking soda

The next step is to add half a cup of baking soda. This should then be left to rest for a few minutes. The reason that this is such an effective method is that the combination of baking soda and hot water will work on eroding away any grime sitting in your drain.

4. Add vinegar and more hot water

Next, mix together one cup of vinegar and a cup of boiling water. This solution should then be poured down the sink. There will be an extreme chemical reaction from the combination of baking soda and vinegar, which will loosen any remaining dirt, sludge or anything else that might be causing the bad smell.

5. Leave to rest

Cover the drain with a plug, or an old rag if you don't have a plug. This will ensure that the potency of the chemical reaction is maximised as it will stay below the surface of the drain. You'll then need to leave the mixture to do its magic for five to 10 minutes.

6. A final rinse

When you've completed these steps, you'll want to top it all off with one more rinse with boiling hot water. This final rinse will wash away all of that nasty dirt that's been causing the awful smell in your drain.

It's important to understand that for an efficient cleaning technique, you can't store a ready-made baking soda and vinegar mix. For the chemical reaction to work on your drain, you'll need to make sure it takes place within the drain itself. Baking soda and vinegar is a great tool for all kinds of tasks in the home, including general kitchen cleaning and for other parts of your plumbing system, such as with a smelly garbage disposal unit.

If the smell from your drain continues to linger, or if it seems there's a blockage you're not able to shift, then it might be time to call in a professional plumbing team.
