You might have heard the term ‘UV system’ when people talk about their water. Well, what is a UV system and do you need one? We’ve got the lowdown for you here.
The water that flows through your pipes is not 100% pure. Some people use water filter jugs for their drinking water and a UV system is just like a bigger version of filtration and water purification. It works by installing an ultraviolet (UV) light strip in water to blast any dirt particles or microorganisms lurking in your H2O.
UV light helps disinfect water by filtering all the bad stuff out of the water, without changing the water’s pH, taste, colour or smell. The systems are fitted at the point of use, for example if you’re using your kitchen tap for drinking water, you will need to install a system in the piping below the kitchen sink. If you need your water to be pure in several areas of the home, then fit the system as close to the water storage tank as possible. In addition to the light strip, you will also need a 5-micron sediment filter upstream of any UV system to get rid of any larger particles which could block the UV light and thus hindering its efficiency. Finally, the whole water system is pumped with chlorine in order to give the UV a jump start and to eradicate any bacteria already in the system.
We rely on water for so many things, drinking, washing, cleaning and cooking, the list is practically endless. Because it is such a vital part of our lives, it is paramount that this water is as clean as possible. You can test the water in your home by using a home water analysis kit to find out what contaminates could be in your water. This will indicate whether you require water purification measures.
Once you have fitted your UV system, it’s good to go and you need not do anything else. Leave the lights on, otherwise you risk an onslaught of bacteria in your water. Lamps will, on average, last for a year from the time they are fitted. They also use little power so will not make much impact on your energy bills.
The light sleeve itself may eventually be covered in water deposits, often visible by white traces, so can be removed and cleaned with a cloth every few months.
