5 Easy Tips for Eliminating and Preventing Garbage Disposal Odours

5 Easy Tips for Eliminating and Preventing Garbage Disposal Odours
5th June 2013

Garbage disposals are a convenient part of the kitchen, making it easy to deal with small food scraps without having to deal with the mess and hassle of scraping dishes into the garbage. Unfortunately, garbage disposals can also create problems in the kitchen, primarily in the form of unpleasant odours.

Here are our tips for cleaning, deodorising and caring for your garbage disposal.

  • Use citrus. There's a reason why so many natural cleaning products have citrus fragrances; not only are the scents of orange, lemon and lime incredibly pleasant, but their natural juices have disinfectant products that can destroy the microbes that give rise to foul odours. An easy way to freshen your garbage disposal is to cut a lemon or a lime into eighths. Turn on the disposal and then drop one eighth at a time into the disposal, letting it run for at least 30 seconds.
  • Try deep cleaning. If citrus fruits do not alleviate the odours, try using a mix of baking soda and vinegar. Combine up to one box of baking soda with plain white vinegar in a bowl and stir. Pour the mixture down the garbage disposal and let it rest for at least 1 hour. Then, run the water for up to 1 minute to flush out the solution.
  • Remove debris. When there is a lingering odour that you cannot eliminate with a natural solution, you can attempt to clean out the opening of the disposal with a brush that is designed specifically for cleaning plumbing. Only put the brush partway inside to prevent damaging the blades and the mechanism.
  • Get professional help. Stubborn odours may require the help of a plumber. If years of debris or a major clog has built up in the plumbing, a professional plumbing service like Sydney Emergency Plumbing can help remove the cause of the problem.
  • Run the disposal frequently and use it appropriately. To help prevent odours from developing in the garbage disposal, be sure to run the disposal every time that you wash dishes. Also, avoid placing large amounts of food in the disposal. Remember that the disposal is intended only for debris. It should never be used as a waste bin. If you have large amounts of food to dispose of, such as spoiled leftovers, throw them in the garbage.
